"We Will Smash the Old World to Smithereens"

WE WILL SMASH THE OLD WORLD TO SMITHEREENS

A speech by GPCR luminary and Red Guard organizer Professor Nie Yuanzi, Beijing Red Guard Rally, Tianammen Square, August 18, 1966

A Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution without parallel in history is being carried out in our country under the leadership of our great leader Chairman Mao. This is a revolution of world significance. We will smash the old world to smithereens, create a new world and carry the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution through to the end.

Sailing the seas depends on the helmsman, the growth of everything depends on the sun, and making revolution depends on Mao Zedong's thought. We heartily wish long life to our most respected and beloved great leader Chairman Mao. We shall follow Chairman Mao's teachings, pay attention to state affairs and carry the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution through to the end. We will certainly follow Chairman Mao's teachings, face the world and brave the storms, and become most reliable successors to the revolutionary cause of the proletariat.

Chairman Mao is the reddest sun in our hearts. The Chinese people's revolution has never been all tranquil without storms and waves. We shall bear Chairman Mao's teachings firmly in mind, and temper and test ourselves in great storms and stresses. We will defy death to defend the Party's Central Committee and Chairman Mao. We face a mountain of swords and a sea of flames, but we also have a great beacon light - Mao Zedong's thought which will surely guide us to victory.

Chairman Mao stands among us. This is the happiest and most important moment in our lives. We'll read his works, follow his teachings, act according to his instructions and be his good pupils for the rest of our lives.

"The situation in our country is excellent. The people of the whole country have boundless love for Chairman Mao and the Central Committee. Mao Zedong's thought has penetrated people's minds, the political consciousness of the masses is higher than it has ever been and tremendous successes have been registered in the socialist revolution and construction. No one who opposes Chairman Mao, Mao Zedong's thought, the Party's Central Committee, the dictatorship of the proletariat or the socialist system can escape the censure and condemnation by the whole Party and the whole nation, whoever he may be, whatever high position he may hold and however much a veteran he may be. The only possible result is his total ruination." - from "The 'Royalists' Have Panicked", People's Daily, Beijing, June 4, 1966
